Given the events of today, I think this is a good time to talk about how we go about making allies and I have a specific instance that I'd like to discuss that is related to this.
Let's start with the specific: We have been approached by a small alliance asking to merge with us. They did have some conditions, mostly centering around porting their officers' titles over to the new merged alliance.
(There is one other issue to this merger that is irrelevant to this discussion altho it does factor into our choice on that particular alliance)
While I do want to make this alliance stronger, the condition they've put forward is a bit unsettling: I'd rather the officers earn their keep first, and then we can discuss promotions, but I'd like to hear what our members say to this idea.
The more general case: How do we decide on which new members to invite, since we are no longer a public alliance? We have a few slots open at this time.
Now, to the more general case: Allies.
It's clear that we've made enough of an impression that we need allies who are stronger than we are. We have some inroads at HOWL and I've begun to take steps to expand and develop those. The triumvirate of alliances, as I see it, is BORG, HOWL and FLR.
We can write off BORG (for now)but are there any others we should pursue in order to solidify our security?

You have FLR listed twice there, so I'm not sure if you meant WWJD as the third or someone else.
I would agree that even with an alliance merge, the new players should need to prove themselves here if they want to be officers with us. What is the general criteria to be considered for a promotion anyway?
BORG can go ... well. No need to be nasty, but I'm just waiting on their implosion.
As far as recruiting goes, if one maintains a helpful attitude in GC and sets up diplomatic relations with those alliances which require a higher level for entry, then perhaps those alliances would be willing to help funnel those who ask about membership but do not meet their requirements to someone like us, who does not require a specific level. And then there's just the chatting in GC option, catching people who are looking for a new alliance by posting there and letting them know that we're recruiting.
What was that alliance's other issue with the merger?

Shit. I meant, BORG, HOWL and FLR
The other issue, and it's a big one, is a language barrier. I don't mean that people should only speak English, it's just that there would be no way to communicate and collaborate on strategies or attacks with this group. I can force situations where it might be a problem, but it's also possible that I'm overthinking this a bit.

I think there a difference between a merge (two alliances of similar size/stature) and a group that simply wants to join us. If we're talking like 5-10 people here, they don't get to keep their officer status; we're doing them a favour letting them join. Maybe the Admiral gets mid-level, maybe a commodore get's mid-level as well, but truthfully they are simply joining us and don't get a head start unless there's a good reason (which there may be, I'm just not seeing it right now).

That's pretty much my take on this, Paww. Make the admiral a commodore, his commodores, agents or premieres. If they start pulling their weight, except for the admiral/commodore, we can promote them later
