Yea, I made up a word. Shoot me.
This thread should be read and replied to for all discussion with respect to whether we as an Alliance will fully respect and obey the RoE of the first thread, and what we can and/or should do to anyone who violates our regulations.
Please reply to the poll whether you participate in the discussion or not.
I will add my thoughts as a comment. Remember, we want a consensus on this. I'm not going to apply my opinion unless or until the issue becomes one that is not addressed in the discussion

As an Admiral, I will be mostly responsible for talking with other players, admirals and whoever the heck else decides to lecture me about our alliance, so I would prefer our choice be one that I can defend in the heat of the moment.
As a general rule, I would like to follow RoE. So far we've managed not to step on anyone's toes too badly but there are always bigger fish out there than us.
To me, the goal of the game is to beat the game itself. Part of the strategy is to hit other players and the their resources. As someone who has both participated in and been subject to a raid, I own that fact. Even if I had not been aggressive about my accumulation of "wealth," I'd be subject to hits. It helps that I know that most people, the lion's share of them, will mostly obey RoE.
On the other hand, shit happens. The RoE covers some of those circumstances to be sure, but I am very willing to be flexible in letting people be who they are. I do know from private conversations with a few of you that this is not a completely acceptable position, that you want to hit and hit hard.
Understand that by doing that, you endanger the success of both your fellow Alliance members as well as the Alliance itself. It's going to be hard to pursue the goals of this game if we have to keep looking over our shoulders for other teams.
For now, it seems to be a small problem and so I personally can support that kind of activity, but if it comes down to being an issue where I can't leave my station without getting hit by a massive attack...I will vote to throw people out of the Alliance,
See, there's the problem with the RoE: there's no mechanism to truly enforce them. It's left up to the Admirals and the only recourse WE have is to toss an offender out, which serves little purpose except to let that person go to another alliance and do us up the way he or she has done others.
Hell, this server is so dysfunctional, there are TWO Discords for it, both accepting complaints about players!
So....executive summary...
I guess I fall squarely in the "Conditional support for RoE" camp, with a good faith effort to obey them when and where possible. Violators will violate, but if it becomes a burden to the Alliance, we should toss that player and risk their retaliations. The question to be determined is, how many violations will trigger that.
I think there, I'm poised to be pretty lenient. For me, it's going to one down to a "What were you thinking, hitting them?" moment, rinse and repeat.

I'm a rules-based guy; 37 years in the military will do that to you As noted in my other post, I believe there needs to be greater retribution when the RoE are violated, and I think that would help alleviate some of the "hit hard, hit fast" retribution. I think it's easier to apply things in a black/white world here, otherwise the conditional road simply slides further and further towards rogue. I reiterate, I've played this game for three weeks and reserve the right to change my mind once (if?) I've been around longer!

I agree, the rules of engagement are meaningless if not enforced.

I'm of the mind to obey the basic ROE and not be a dick about things. If I retaliate for a hit, I keep it within ROE. I pvp where I must and mostly leave people alone. That said, neither will I repeatedly take it up the ass if someone's hitting me out of our guidelines and we aren't at war.
It's a war game, so combat ships are fair, as are mining ships which are over capacity or on an empty node that I need. If they have purple (alliance member, heart, or hand), I don't hit them, regardless of the rest. That's about as many guidelines as I really need early in the game.

People would get tired of the game and drop out quickly.
Here's the thing: Scopely makes money off this game, else why develop it.
But how?
We don't see advertisements, so that revenue stream is lost.
We don't pay a monthly subscription rate, so that stream is lost.
The only way they can afford to open new servers and expand the game, to write updates and add features, is to find a way to get people to buy shit in the game.
And the only way they're going to buy shit in the game* is if they feel they stand a fighting chance to beat the game.
This is why you never hear me mock people who buy stuff in the game, even tho I think they're suckers: I wouldn't be able to play for (pretty much, I have bought a few small things) free. And it's also why RoE is vital to the game.
* and support players like you and me by keeping the game free, ain't Marxism wonderful?

My honest opinion is we should follow ROE but if there is definitive proof that another alliance failed to follow ROE there should be retaliation. If alliances are serious they will not break the rule of honor. But that can be situational cause if they have new members they may not know or they have bad seeds in there alliance who don't care about it. For members of their alliance who are say level 17 and above if the dont follow ROE they should be punished for their actions.
